New Home Studio build in Japan

I think the saying goes that building a studio will take 2 to 3 times the time and budget you planned for. My build is on target to end up in that range.

2722 Also if anyone knows anything about dirt vs. sand for the filling of the studio foundation + what kind, please let me know as well. This is really a question for a structural engineer as it will dependent upon how much weight it has to bear, what local building codes require, and what anti-ear...

2718 ... an image I found on GS here by John both have the ceiling gypsums staggered. John is my studio designer. In working with him I have come to appreciate that he knows exactly what he instructs and so that diagram would be worth following. Any questions you have regarding it would be worth as...

Ceiling-wall-plan.jpg Keith, this was almost what I did. Almost because we realised we needed a layer of OSB before we put up the plasterboard layers. Our general contractor has done most things including the studio walls but a friend who is experienced with ceilings came in an mounted the ceiling ...

Yes, Jag, they are double-skinned, glued and screwed. Have a look at posts 39 and 42 on page 3 for their construction and post 56 on page 4 for the duct liner. Normally silencer boxes are fully enclosed but in my case John Brandt specified a wall or a wall and a ceiling to be the remaining sides. Po...

2652 My concern now is what about electromagnetic interference? Do balanced lines suffer them? Or is it just a concern for unbalanced lines? What about the suggestion of running audio cables as far as possible from electrical ones, and crossing them at 90 degrees only? I am not as knowledgeable abo...

Sorry, Jag, I cannot help you with the electrics as it is not my strong point. 2695 I've been researching filters, and can't seem to find something that would work. Is there a specific type of filter I should be looking for? I too cannot find anything that seems official, proper or specific so I am ...

2640 Could you tell us more about electrical and audio cables runs? I suggest you start with John's PDF Grounding, Wiring, & Zero Loop Area from his resources page. Read the last page, the conclusion, and then the whole 14-page document. You will see photos showing the double conduits, one for ...

Gregwor's design shows that the width of the box is 2X+3 + 2 duct liners (2 * 1") + 2 wood thicknesses (2 * 1" MDF). You decided that your X is 10.5". So, 2 * 10.5" + 3 + 2 * 1" + 2 * 1" = 21 + 3 + 2 + 2 = 28". At least I agree with your 28" width. Height, the...

I found that once twisted, the live and neutral stayed as a twisted pair without help but I used tape to keep the earth alongside. The first photo in post 34 shows a few runs with tape every 20cm (8"). Those cables have white tape every 20cm. Post 41 may interest you, Jag94, as it shows the cab...

2618 When you build your boxes, use a router to cut the circular openings. If you don't have a router make a jig for your jig saw - see the last photo in post 92, here . I cut my silencer holes with a jig saw but without a jig, freehand circles. Sealing the duct in place with caulk means a not quit...

2606 ... see if you can figure out what they did wrong, and why it did not perform as it could have, if it would have been designed and built better. A quick glance through the PDF reveals a few things I would have avoided if that was my build: - building a room with two of the three dimensions alm...

2605 Wait, flexible duct won't create a flanking path? This post by Rod Gervais tells us in the 3rd paragraph that he uses flexible duct to isolate. Alternatively, I came across this (see the 9th photo) which you might prefer. At the time I didn't understand what he had done but I do now: the two o...
