Attic Shaped Studio

Greetings Jennifer, Nice to see you're back to construction. I'm thinking about the two layers of 18mm OSB. That will indeed be extremely heavy. The only way I could get my head around the idea of the weight was to think about kitchen cabinets: good ones are 3/4" thick (just a bit less than 18m...

Greetings athnony, I'm assuming I'll need a separate air exchange system If you're linking up to a central HVAC system (provided you can), you likely won't as centralized systems have fresh air already. But your HVAC contractor will tell you for sure. If you do need additional fresh air and you can ...

How To/Best Way to Run Conduit (electric/audio wire) Through 2 Leaf Walls?

An excellent explanation!

But I must know: I've never seen any cables (electrical, alarm, cable TV, etc) in that vibrant green. What on earth is being carried through that cable?

Greetings athnony, I echo Gareth's sentiments. Also, in both of your layouts, you have many doors which is quite a bit of added work. With one big room, you'll save lots of hassle in that department. The other thing to consider with two rooms is the significantly more complex HVAC. All the best, Paul

How To/Best Way to Run Conduit (electric/audio wire) Through 2 Leaf Walls?

silicones/caulks will eat away at the insulating layer of the wire sheathing over time I'm not sure this is correct: the holes made for cables (think coax here) coming into your house are usually caulked after the cable is run, and I've never seen any of those fail. If in doubt, check the label on ...

How To/Best Way to Run Conduit (electric/audio wire) Through 2 Leaf Walls?

Forgot to answer your other question. Caulk is your friend, but choose one that stays elastic for 50 years or more. There are several, but I use Big Stretch on my home remodel projects.

How To/Best Way to Run Conduit (electric/audio wire) Through 2 Leaf Walls?

Yes, you are correct: you shouldn't be able to look one through the other. This goes for the HVAC holes too.

How To/Best Way to Run Conduit (electric/audio wire) Through 2 Leaf Walls?

Greetings Chris, Search the forum for "raceways" (or "Wiremold" or "surface mount"). Legrand is the major manufacturer of the stuff. This allows you to have a SINGLE penetration into the inner leaf, then everything from that point is mounted directly on the wall. It is,...

Starlight,

I like the hammerdrill pic. I am wondering if there is any meaning behind it.

I would think sandwiching the MLV between the borders and door, secured by a series of screws going through the border into the wooden part of the door would be sufficient.

This seems like a good plan. I would also put a fender washer on each side of the MLV.

Studio Build: Garage Conversion in Los Angeles

Greetings Jag94, While I can't help you with your main issue, I will say something about I built this space to not have any holes in the walls. I am going to use surface mount in my build as well. From my understanding, there is usually one penetration (per leaf, obviously) for a standard in-wall bo...

Greetings Jennifer,

Would it not be sufficient to attach it to the small top and bottom borders you mention?

My concern would be the stress from the weight of the MLV on the top border (If it is a trim piece).

All the best,

Paul

Designing My Soffit Mounts

Greetings, Before going to all the trouble to build this, you do realize you won't have very good isolation, especially with the doors and windows in the equation. The first step would be to improve that situation which will, of course, make your room smaller (completely changing your calculations)....
