Thank you Glenn. The low end is completely under control in the room. There is this large bass trap with corner traps on the rear end of the room behind drums. The room sounds good but I feel like it could be even better but don't know what would help. A local acoustical designer suggested removing the cloud and covering the ceiling over the drums with 4" of 703 rigid fiberglass with 4" gap over that half of the room. Keep the floor as lively as possible ands remove all reflection from ceiling. Installing diffusion on the ceiling and front wall of the other half of the room. What are your thoughts on this idea?

Jason

if anything, i might put a poly on the ceiling down the ridge to provide some scattering / diffraction. it's also good for the LF as well. also, scattered absorption on the ceiling (like widely spaced checkerboard 300mm x 300mm x 50mmT) on the angles can provide scattering / diffusive effects.

Thank you Glenn,

Could you draw a sketch of how you recommend the polys?

maybe something like this: kerf the plywood and mount on braces, attach to ceiling (hanging down a bit) with some cove lighting on the edges, backfill with cloth cover insulation. paint or stain the plywood. use turnbuckles or chain to hang and be able to adjust.

Thank you very much Glenn!!! I apologize for not responding sooner. It’s been a crazy week. This is a lot of work but it makes sense and I’m capable of doing it. Could I use 3 pieces of 1/4” plywood that easily bends applying one at a time an stack them together instead of having to cut all those slits to be able to bend a thick piece?

you could probably just use 1/4" -- not sure why i was thinking 3/4"

After doing this treatment for the ridge do you think I could add more diffusion of some kind to the rest of the ceiling to help with flutter echo between the floor and ceiling and help sound in general? I don't really want to add any more absorption because I don't want to lose much more liveness.

the poly should add a good amount of the diffusion effects you are seeking. however, another option is scattered absorption on the angled sides 12x12x2" squares spaced on 36x36 should give a lot of diffusive effect without losing the liveness.

or as a checker board, or arcs if you want more decorative. you could also vary the size of the pads as well as shapes also. the idea is to influence the absorption and reflective space enough to prevent pure slap echoes from occurring whilst still having the reflective portions providing the HF support.
